About minoxidil

What it is, and what to ask.

What it is

Hair grows in cycles, and pattern loss shortens the growing phase until the follicle produces something too fine to see. Minoxidil widens the small vessels feeding the follicle and lengthens that growth phase, which is why hair that was on its way out stays longer. It works on hair you still have rather than restoring what is gone. Compounded, and not FDA-approved.

How it is used

Applied to a dry scalp once or twice daily, to the area rather than the hair. It has to be continuous — stop and the cycle returns to where it was over a few months. Expect nothing for the first eight weeks, and a brief increase in shedding early on is normal and usually a sign the cycle is resetting.

What to discuss with your provider

Tell your provider about any heart condition, low blood pressure or scalp disease, and about pregnancy, plans for it or breastfeeding. Mention if you have had irritation from a topical minoxidil before.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Compounded minoxidil is prepared by a state-licensed U.S. pharmacy for an individual patient and is not FDA-approved. It is not a generic or a copy of any FDA-approved product. Topical minoxidil is not appropriate for everyone. Reported effects include scalp irritation, dryness and itching, unwanted hair growth on the face where the product transfers, and an initial increase in shedding. Rarely, systemic absorption may cause dizziness, palpitations, or swelling — stop and contact a clinician if these occur. Discuss your full medical history with your provider. Information on this page is educational and is not medical advice. Individual results vary and no outcome is guaranteed. Product imagery is stylised and does not reflect the actual label, size or appearance of the prescription product you may receive.
